STERILIZATION AND DISINFECTION
Definition
1. Sterilization: the process by which all microorganism including spores are destroyed .
2. Antiseptic: referse to asubstance which inhibits the growth of micro-organism.
3. Disinfectant : refers to a substance used to destroye infections or contagious agent
4. Medical asepsis: refers to aprafices which help to reduce the number of disseases producing micro-organism from one person or place to another.
5. Surgical asepsis : refers to practices render and keep objects and areas free from all micro-organism (sterile )
6. Asepsis : is the obsence of disease produsing micro-organism .
METHOD OF STERILIZITION
1. PHYSICAL METHOD
2. CHEMICAL METHOD
Physical methods :
By heat : dry heat and moist heat :
DRY HEAT INCLUDE:
· Oven _140-220 c time 1-2 hours
· Ironing
· Inflamed , heating
· Ultra –violet rays
MOIST HEAT INCLUDE:
· Boiling but does not kill spores
· Pasteurazation , for food (milk )
· Steam under preassure (auto –clave )
Chemical metho :
1. Phenol : it is used for surgical instrument .
2. Soap and detergent
3. Alcohol
4. Halogens : it is bacteriocidal agent eg Iodin : used for sterilizition of skin Chlorin : used for water
5. Formalin
6. Aerosol and gaseous disinfectant eg SO2 ,chlorin and formalin
